All You Need To Know About CNC Machine & Its Main Functions



A CNC machine, also known as a computer numerical machine is a heavy-duty machine used in industries for carrying functions such as manufacturing, cutting, shaping, and designing. The machine is computer-controlled. Implying that, all of its functions are carried out by software. Its primary function is to manufacture as well as monitor the production of products. 

Its working is simple and easy. The instructions regarding the structure and design of products are fed into it and then CNC machines take care of the rest. It only requires a one-man operator, but then he must know the right way to operate it.   

CAD and CAM are two important programs used in manufacturing. CAD, short for Computer-aided design is responsible for the design of tools, while CAM (Computer-aided manufacturing) controls how they're made. This includes everything from designing, manufacturing, controlling, monitoring equipment performance, and ensuring the right operations. 

This machine is widely used in industries. The reason being that it makes the work very easy for all the workers and reduces the man labor. It saves the time spent monitoring the tools and checking them for their proper working. The pre-programmed software installed in it dictates, monitors, and controls a range of complex types of machinery from grinders, turners to CNC lathes and routers. There are many types of CNC machines available based on the functions they perform. Some machines perform the assembly function, while others perform three-dimensional cuttings, etc.

This article is going to discuss two main functions performed by CNC machines, namely, CNC turning and grinding service

Although both of these processes are manufacturing techniques there are some differences that we are going to discuss. When it comes to producing faster and affordable customized parts, CNC turning takes the crown. Whereas CNC grinding is only restricted to some types of motion and cutting tools. Unlike, the latter, turning is well suited for all sorts of cutting designs and manufacturing. 

In simple terms, CNC turning is a manufacturing process that holds bars of materials in a chuck and rotates them until the desired shape is achieved. It also uses a rotating tool, which comes in handy to successfully remove the product from the machine once it is manufactured. The latter process is also known as subtraction machining. 

On the other hand, CNC grinding is a process that produces customized designed parts of hardware. It does so by successfully detaching the material from the workpiece with the help of rotating multiple rotating cutting tools. This process is well suited for small-scale industries. These machines have three degrees of freedom namely X, Y, and Z axes. The machine moves around these axes while the workpiece stays stationary. Even though the latter process produces perfect-sized and shaped products but it is time-consuming, this is why it is suitable for small-scale industries. 

Uses

  • CNC the turning process can be utilized in production processes like boring, grooving, drilling, facing, and knurling. As far as, CNC grinding is concerned, it can be used to assist in production processes like chemical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal.

  • Electric industries also use CNC machines for various functions 
  • CNC turning and grinding processes are also used in the manufacturing of Electrical discharge machines 
  • They are also used in metal removal and extraction 
These machines are a golden ticket to success for carton industries because one of their fundamental functions is producing boxes of different shapes and cuts and monitoring their process.
